Major transformation initiatives often involve multiple and at times simultaneous projects. Managing these efforts require the application of sound project management process and practices to ensure that efforts are focused and directed to reach stated objectives. We believe that implementation of effective project management practices in a multi faceted business transformation initiative must go beyond the development and presentation of project management tools and templates. Too often efforts focus on specific project efforts without looking at the transformation in a more holistic fashion.
In our experience, the creation of tools and templates can be done relatively quickly, however the application of a program management approach requires more. It requires an understanding of the transformation initiative itself and the inherent complexities and challenges that complex business transformation initiatives can present. By understanding and identifying what is required, effective and pragmatic tools and processes can be created to effectively assist in an organization's transformation effort.
Here is where an effective transformation program management approach can really benefit an organization. At PSTG, we apply our extensive business transformation experience to our program management and project management approach and delivery. We create a program management framework, which is layered above project management efforts. The purpose of our program management framework is to define the constituent projects often associated with complex transformation initiatives, providing an infrastructure where projects are coordinated, integrated in terms of inter-dependencies and effectively managed. For us, an effective transformation program management approach starts with the identification of the multiple, inter-dependent projects that are often required to support large, complex transformations, whether in the area of program continuity and design, human resources, service delivery, governance or operations.
Under this scenario, PSTG provides program management support that reflects the coordination and prioritization of efforts across projects, organizational units and entities to ensure that resources are managed from an enterprise focus. More importantly, our overall program management approach allows us to identify and harvest those organizational benefits driven from the transformation itself.
PSTG has been involved in a number of recently implemented business transformation initiatives in which we provided program management/project management support including:
- The set up a program management office and provision of project management services in support of the implementation of the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities Labour Market Development Agreement and the Labour Market Training Division's transformation efforts
- Program management support to the Government of Trinidad and Tobago in support of its Information, Communication and Technology implementation efforts
- Program management/project management support to the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities organizational restructuring efforts
